"JIM JARMUSCH takes on the vampire film genre. And much like his previous western DEAD MAN, the result is distinctive, original and remarkable.
ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE is a film that follows the everyday life of its vampire couple, played with great choesive charisma by TILDA SWINTON and TOM HIDDLESTON.
While this film remains respectful of the traditional vampire movie features, it is mostly unblemished and somewhat untouched by conventional narratives that go with the genre. Its casual experimentation is full of vibrant magnetism, and while despite perceptive implications there is no real horror, there is plenty of excitement in the unusual riveting exploration of the more down to earth side of vampirical representation.
Furthermore, there is modern and alternative feel to ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE that is at once breezy, glamorous and deadpan.
Its art direction is exceptional, its cinemtography sufficiently dark. However, what really drives the film, and what JARMUSCH allows to be the true driving force of the film, is the chemistry accentuated hopeless romanticism shared between the pivotal couple.
In the end, more than being the usual horror flick, this film is an ultimate representation of a sexually charged romanticism, iconic and self-conscious but equally as human and universal in a true arthouse rendition of a normally conventionalised suit."
