"An FBI must confide in an incarcerated and manipulative killer to receive his help on catching another serial killer who skins his victims. Demme’s film is interesting because aside from the chilling concept and the many horrific elements that it makes use of, it battles dumb witted shlocks with an intelligent screenplay with many convincing thrills and a solid pace that keeps it tense, intense, suspenseful and entertaining from start to end. Apart from the great direction by Demme himself, who is great at building a controlled and yet dark atmosphere that heightens the impact of the psychological connotations of the story, the acting is superb. In particular, Anthony Hopkins’ performance as Hannibal Lecter is very unique and distinguishes itself from other super villain or criminal mastermind characters that have ‘graced’ the screen since the beginning of cinema. It is no wonder, hence, that he was awarded an Academy Award for his troubles."
