Rob Reiner's film is not very pretentious, and unsurprisingly goes for less of a political statement approach and more for its strictly romantic and human side of the story. This is perhaps what finally makes the film so charming, even more so because the screenplay is full of maturity and sensibility that to some extent allows it a good level of credibility. 

The American President is a film that also recalls a classicist style of romantic movies, and one that delightfully works quite well."
