BEDAZZLED (1967) - ♦♦♦♦
Directed by - Stanley Donen
Written by - Peter Cook, Dudley Moore
Starring - Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Eleanor Bron, Raquel Welch
"An everyman far too shy to approach the woman he loves is offered an opportunity by the devil himself, who offers him a number of opportunities in which he will change his persona in order to pursue her in return of his soul. However, his every attempt seem to compile a succession of catastrophes as his plans timely backfire.
BEDAZZLED has, without a doubt, one of the most entertaining and yet simple presises for a comedy of all time, influenced by gothic surrealism and a seemingly innocent yet quite dark sense of humour.
DUDLEY MOORE as the good-natured sap and PETER CCOK as the charming, prankster embodiment of the devil are in top form in a story they developed themselves.
STANLEY DONEN's competent direction is particularly attentive to the film's outlook and art direction, with the numerous different vignettes that unfold throughout the film as MOORE's character tranforms into a millionaire, a sixties rockstar and even a nun among others.
BEDAZZLED's creativeness and lively nature are quite admirable. Some of its aspects are a little outdated, due to its cool undertones being deeply rooted within the trends of the time. Nevertheless, as we await for a worthy comparison in modern times, it is certainly remains one of the most delightful offerings of sixties British cinematic comedy."
