"Musical remake of the Wellman 1937 movie about a woman, rising star of the film industry, falling in love with a man, falling star of the industry. The parallel storyline is haunting, and the musical adds a sense of dark glamour to the whole film. Much like Singin’ in the Rain had done before, this is a musical that exposes a dark side of the cinema industry in its most happily and joyously commercial form. All in all, this may be the most dramatic musical of the fifties, especially one that looked so deeply at the dark side of the entertainment industry. Garland is in excellent shape in the comedy, drama and musical. Mason’s performance is touching. Cukor confirms himself as one of Hollywood’s most faithful directors of fifties glamour."
